An ETA allows travellers from ETA eligible countries to visit Australia for tourism purposes for up to three months within a twelve month period.
A tourist visa to Australia entitles visitors to enter Australia multiple times for up to 3 months at a time for tourism, to visit family & friends, or for a business trip.

| Permanent Entry Visas: | Until July 2002, permanent entry visa applications are lodged, processed and decided in Santiago. While permanent entry visa applications can be lodged at any post, it is recommended that they be lodged direct with Santiago, as forwarding documents from other posts can take up to a month. However, fees/charges can be paid at any post, and the receipt should then be sent by the applicant with the application direct to Santiago.
From 1 July 2002 permanent entry visa applications will be lodged, processed and decided in Washington, USA. |
| Temporary Entry Visas: | Temporary entry visa applications for persons residing in Central America, Costa Rica, Cuba, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua and Panama are lodged, processed and decided in Mexico City. |
| Special Procedures: | Refugee/Humanitarian applications for Central America should be lodged in Santiago, and are decided by Principal Migration Officer/Senior Migration Officers Santiago.
